Michael Selsted, MD, PhD, an internationally known scholar and biomedical entrepreneur, was named chair of the Department of Pathology in February 2009. Selsted came to the Keck School of Medicine of USC from the University of California, Irvine, where he held the Warren L. Bostick Endowed Chair in Pathology. Selsted’s research has focused on defensins, antimicrobial peptides produced by the body that provide a first line of defense against potentially invasive pathogens. His discoveries have resulted in more than 20 U.S. patents, and he has co-founded three biomedical startup companies.
